Beyond the Island
We all wonder what we will find when researching our ancestors, and Robyn is no exception when she leaves Sydney on a business trip to England. Seeking the missing link in her father’s family tree she visits Cornwall, and things start to fall into place. But there are consequences when she decides to remain in England longer than initially planned.
So that’s the plot in a nutshell. The original idea came to me in a rather naughty dream. Then I drew on some of my humorous and frustrating experiences as an Australian living in the UK, and also gave vent to some more serious emotions.
I completed the first draft in 2002, then the software package corrupted and I thought I’d lost it – all 118,000 words! Then a few years later I discovered how to rescue it and managed to print it out, a great doorstep of paper. The font was very small, there were bits of text missing and odd symbols between each word, but there was enough to work with. So I did a rewrite, worked hard on it for months. My final version was on a memory stick which corrupted while transferring to another PC. But was I daunted? Was I heck! I managed to print it out again and do a complete retype in a matter of weeks. Luckily by this time I’d edited it down to a mere 113,000 words, which I finally published in 2012.
I’ve had a lot of very favourable feedback: readers have described it as a page turner. They’ve become involved with the characters and have asked all sorts of questions.
Film makers take note: Beyond the Island would make a great movie …
